Teena Marie, known as the "Queen of Ivory Soul" , was found dead today at his home in Los Angeles, local media reported.
The station, which broadcasts from Philadelphia soul and blues, said the singer, 54, died in his sleep Christmas Day.
Roland Martin, CNN reporter, issued a message on twitter saying he had spoken with the manager of Marie and he had confirmed the news.
Marie, who managed to succeed in an environment dominated by black singers, gained fame with his song lovergirl, in 1984. It was "a dark voice trapped in a white body," said Cathy Hughes of Radio One R & B, according to Martin.
